UFCW activists Light the Night from coast to coast

October 27, 2014 – On the same evening in three different provinces, UFCW Canada activists, friends and family raised a combined total of more than $200,000 for blood cancer research and awareness. On October 18, members of UFCW Canada in Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver joined with thousands of walkers for annual Light the Night fundraising events.
More than 3,000 people participated in the Halifax Light the Night, which began in Parade Square near Citadel Hill. Together, members of UFCW Canada Locals 864, 1252 and 1288P raised nearly $40,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC). The total raised by all participants in the Halifax event was more than $400,000.
In Vancouver, UFCW Canada Locals 247 and 1518 joined forces as the UFCW BC team, raising a total of $60,000 for the LLSC. Dozens of staff, members and family from the two local unions participated in the walk, which convened at the Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. The UFCW BC team is the second biggest sponsor of the Vancouver Light the Night. The total raised at this year’s walk was $632,000.
UFCW Canada staff, members and friends collected a total of $157,000 in donations for the LLSC. Thousands of walkers attended the Montreal march at Jean Drapeau Park and raised a combined total of approximately $1.2 million. For the second consecutive year, the event in Montreal took the lead in fundraising for LLSC.
As Canada’s leading union for private sector workers, UFCW Canada is the largest annual fundraising organization for the LLSC. Last year, UFCW Canada members, families and friends raised a total of more than $2.5 million for blood cancers research and awareness.
