Halifax – October 27, 2016 – UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces activists led the way at this year's Light the Night walk in Halifax, with the UFCW’s “Team Luminary” emerging as one of the top fundraising teams at the event. Dozens of UFCW Canada Local 864 members, family members, and staff participated in the walk, raising over $30,000 for the life-saving efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
“The fight against leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers is a cause that is very close to our hearts, and I want to thank the members, activists, and staff for their incredible support for this walk,” says Mark Dobson, President of the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council and UFCW Canada’s Regional Director for the Eastern Provinces. “Together, we are making a difference in the lives of those affected by blood cancers,” he adds.
Thousands of participants set out at dusk from the Garrison Grounds for the Halifax Light the Night Walk on October 15, which in total raised more than $603,000. The monies raised support the LLSC’s programs to raise awareness, provide patient and family services, and fund research into finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers.
Since adopting the LLSC as our union’s charity of choice in 1985, UFCW Canada members and staff have raised over $36 million for the LLSC.
