Halifax – May 4, 2022 – There was a moment of silence at the Day of Mourning ceremony on April 28, held at the UFCW Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) Education Conference in Halifax, in honour of one of own members, the late Paul Godin. Godin was a member of UFCW Canada Local 1288P at Sysco Moncton, who died as a result of a tragic jobsite accident on August 20, 2021.

Each year in Canada, thousands of workers are killed or injured due to work-related incidents. At the Day of Mourning ceremony, UFCW EPC activists honoured the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these workplace tragedies.

With heavy hearts, Godin’s Sysco co-workers Jean-Paul Comeau, Scott Manship, Jean-Maurice Savoie, and Gordon Blacklock, along with UFCW Canada National Representative Carl Flanagan and Regional Director of the Eastern Provinces, Mark Dobson, spoke at the event. As well, Daniel Smith, President of UFCW Local 1288P, laid a wreath in memory of all injured and killed workers.

“The UFCW EPC believes that every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each workday,” Dobson told event attendees. “By working together – with unions, employers, workers, and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur,” he added.
