UFCW Eastern Provinces Council would like to welcome 87 new members to Local 864 in Nova Scotia following a successful organizing campaign at Eskasoni Health Centre in Eskasoni, Cape Breton.
An application was made to the Nova Scotia Labour Board in December after 53 members signed union cards.
A vote was held on April 9, 2025, and was won with 81 per cent following 40 ‘yes’ votes and 9 ‘no’ votes.
The new members are employed across 15 different positions including: youth space managers, medical transport coordinators, home care managers, home care nurse leads, clinical team leads, maintenance, land-based healing team, community health nurse leads, health services, food security, cultural support team, quality and patient safety, administrative coordinators, maternal child health coordinators and crisis supervisors.
The group is demanding increased wages, medical and dental benefits, pensions and help with lost wages, among other requests.
